Wellness Wednesday | When Gratitude Becomes Wellness
Rest. Receive. Rejoice.
There are moments when gratitude feels bigger than the words “thank you.”
It is that overwhelming awareness that God has been good. Not because everything is perfect. Not because every prayer has been answered exactly the way we wanted. But because when we look around, we realize there is still so much goodness present.
Family. Love. Laughter. Rest. Fun. Peace. Joy.
Sometimes, wellness looks like allowing ourselves to actually experience those things without rushing past them.
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above…” — James 1:17
We Have to Learn to Receive the Good
Many of us have become very good at surviving.
We know how to push through. We know how to carry responsibility. We know how to keep showing up when we are tired. We know how to take care of everyone else, solve the problem, meet the deadline, answer the call, and handle what needs to be handled.
But wellness requires something more than knowing how to survive difficult seasons.
We also have to learn how to receive good seasons.
Sometimes we are so accustomed to anticipating what could go wrong that we struggle to fully enjoy what is going right. Even during moments of rest, our minds are already preparing for the next responsibility.
But what if enjoying the moment is part of taking care of ourselves?
What if laughter is productive?
What if rest is necessary?
What if spending uninterrupted time with the people we love is part of wellness?
What if joy doesn’t have to be earned?
Gratitude Changes What We Notice
From a mental health perspective, gratitude doesn’t mean pretending that challenges don’t exist. It isn’t toxic positivity, and it doesn’t require us to deny disappointment, stress, grief, or uncertainty.
Gratitude simply reminds us that difficulty and goodness can exist at the same time.
I can have things I am still praying about and be grateful.
I can have responsibilities waiting for me and rest.
I can be working toward my next level and appreciate where I am today.
I can acknowledge what has been difficult without allowing difficulty to become the only thing I see.
That’s the beauty of gratitude—it shifts our attention.
Instead of only asking, “What still needs to be done?” we begin asking:
“What has God already done?”
And sometimes that question changes everything.
Rest Is Also a Blessing
One of the things I am becoming increasingly grateful for is rest.
Not just sleep—but real rest.
The kind of rest where your shoulders come down.
Where you laugh until your stomach hurts.
Where you spend time with family.
Where you aren’t checking the clock.
Where you allow yourself to simply be.
Scripture reminds us that even Jesus stepped away from the demands of ministry. There were moments of work, service, teaching, healing, and pouring—but there were also moments of retreat.
We were never designed to pour continuously without being replenished.
Sometimes becoming better doesn’t require doing something more.
Sometimes YOUR BETTER needs you to rest.
Make Room for Joy
Joy deserves space in our wellness conversations, too.
We talk about boundaries. Healing. Therapy. Self-care. Emotional regulation. Stress management. All of those things matter.
But so does fun.
So does playing.
So does vacation.
So does sitting by the pool.
So does being silly with the people you love.
So does taking the picture because you genuinely feel good.
So does thanking God because, for this moment, your heart is full.
There is something healing about allowing ourselves to experience joy without immediately wondering how long it will last.
Enjoy the blessing while you’re standing in it.
Your Wellness Wednesday Reflection
Today, don’t begin with what is missing.
Begin with what is present.
Ask yourself: What blessings have I been moving too quickly to fully experience? Where might God be inviting me to slow down, receive, and simply enjoy?
Maybe your answer is family.
Maybe it’s love.
Maybe it’s a quiet house.
Maybe it’s a much-needed vacation.
Maybe it’s laughter with people who make your soul feel lighter.
Maybe it’s waking up and realizing that after everything you’ve walked through, you still have joy.
Whatever it is—receive it.
Don’t rush through every good moment trying to get to the next destination.
Pause long enough to recognize:
This is a blessing, too.
Today, my cup is full.
My heart is at peace.
My soul is refreshed.
And for that, Lord, I am deeply grateful.
So join me and give yourself permission to Feel Good
Wellness isn’t only about learning how to cope when life is difficult; it’s also about learning how to fully receive the moments when life is good. Give yourself permission to enjoy what God has placed before you. Rest without guilt. Laugh without reservation. Love deeply. Be present. Gratitude helps remind your mind and body that you don’t always have to be preparing for the next challenge. Sometimes, you can simply say, “God, thank You. This moment is good, and I am going to receive it.”
A Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You.
Thank You for blessings seen and unseen, for family, for love, for laughter, for rest, and for the gift of true joy. Help me not to move so quickly through life that I miss the goodness You have placed right in front of me.
Teach me to rest without guilt, to be present without distraction, and to receive Your blessings without worrying about what comes next. Quiet my mind, refresh my spirit, and restore my soul.
May I never become so focused on where I am going that I forget to thank You for where I am.
My cup is full. My heart is at peace. My soul is refreshed. And Lord, I am grateful.
In Jesus’ name, Amen. 💙
