đź’• 30 Days in Pink: My Journey to Raise Breast Cancer Awareness in Our Community
By Allashia Smith-Harris | Becoming A Better Me, LLC
🌸 Standing in Solidarity —
One Shade of Pink at a Time
In October, I made a promise to myself — to wear pink for 30 days straight.
Not because it’s my favorite color (because I am a true Blue and gold Girl), but because it means something. Every pink dress, ribbon, and shade I wear this month carries purpose. It’s a reminder of strength, a symbol of hope, and an act of advocacy — especially for my Black and brown sisters, who face greater risks and barriers when it comes to breast cancer.
For me, this month isn’t just about awareness. It’s about God’s grace, action, education, and empowerment — the kind that saves lives.
đź’— Why This Matters to Me
I’ve seen what breast cancer can do. I’ve had my own scares at age 16 (lumpectomy), age 38, and again at 40. I’ve watched women I love fight through it with courage and grace. Some survived and became powerful testimonies of faith and resilience. Others left behind legacies of love that continue to inspire me today.
What breaks my heart is knowing that too often, the outcomes could have been different.
According to the American Cancer Society (2024), Black women are about 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women, despite having similar rates of diagnosis. Latina women also face disparities, often because of barriers like limited access to care, cultural stigma, or language differences.
These are not just statistics — they are our mothers, our daughters, our friends, our church sisters.
✨ Breaking the Silence
Growing up, conversations about illness — especially breast cancer — weren’t common. It was something whispered about, not talked about openly. But silence doesn’t save lives. Awareness and early detection do.
Now, I’m using my voice and my platform to start those conversations — to remind women in our community to get screened, do monthly self-checks, and know their bodies.
Sis, if you’re reading this, this is your gentle nudge:
đź’— Schedule your mammogram.
💗 Learn what’s normal for your body.
💗 Don’t be afraid to ask questions or demand answers.
You deserve care. You deserve prevention. You deserve life.
đź’• Pink with Purpose
Each morning as I pull on something pink, I say a prayer — for the women still fighting, the survivors who inspire us, and the loved ones we’ve lost.
This pink isn’t just fabric. It’s faith in color. It’s advocacy stitched with love.
It’s a statement: We see you. We honor you. We’re fighting for you.
When I wear pink, I’m standing for a future where no woman’s outcome is determined by the color of her skin, her income, or her zip code.
🌷 Join Me in the Fight
You don’t have to wear pink every day to make an impact. You can:
Share information that encourages early detection.
Support organizations that serve women of color.
Encourage your loved ones to get their screenings.
Show up at a local awareness walk or health fair.
So here’s to 30 days of pink, purpose, and power — and to every Black and brown woman whose story deserves to be told, honored, and celebrated.

Together, we can change the narrative — from fear to faith, from silence to strength, from inequity to access for all.
đź’– Final Thoughts
On this journey of Becoming A Better Me, I’ve learned that health is sacred — it’s part of how we honor God, our bodies, and our purpose. Raising awareness is one way we love our community and each other better.
So as I walk through these 30 days in pink, I’m reminded that together, we are stronger, braver, and more beautiful — inside and out.
Let’s keep fighting, keep shining, and keep becoming. 💕
