Wednesday Wellness | BECOMING: Give Yourself Permission to Grow
“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” — 2 Peter 3:18 (KJV)
BECOMING
There is something powerful about this word.
It reminds us that we are not finished. We are still growing. Still learning. Still healing. Still discovering. Still being stretched. Still becoming. And perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves on our wellness journey is permission to not have it all figured out yet.
Sometimes we become so focused on arriving that we forget to appreciate who we are becoming along the way. We set goals. We pray prayers. We create vision boards. We make plans. We ask God for more, better, greater, different—and then we become frustrated when the transformation doesn’t happen as quickly as we imagined. But becoming is rarely an overnight experience. It is a process.
Becoming Takes Time
Think about a seed. We don’t plant it today and become disappointed tomorrow because we don’t see a flower. We understand that something is happening beneath the surface. Roots are forming. Strength is developing. Growth is occurring—even when we cannot see it yet. Why, then, are we sometimes so impatient with ourselves? We expect ourselves to immediately recover from what hurt us. Immediately know what comes next. Immediately break habits we’ve carried for years. Immediately become comfortable with boundaries we’ve only recently learned to establish. Immediately become the person we’ve spent years praying to become. Beloved, give yourself some grace. You are becoming. And becoming takes time.
Becoming and Our Mental Health
From a mental health perspective, becoming requires self-awareness without self-condemnation. There is a difference between saying: “There are areas of my life that I need to work on.” and saying: “There is something wrong with me because I haven’t mastered them yet.” One creates opportunity for growth. The other creates shame. Healthy becoming allows us to look honestly at ourselves—our thoughts, behaviors, relationships, choices, patterns, strengths, and areas for growth—without allowing what we discover to diminish our worth. I can acknowledge that I need to grow and still love who I am today. I can recognize that I made a mistake without defining myself by the mistake. I can decide that something needs to change without believing that everything about me needs changing. I can celebrate how far I’ve come while acknowledging that there is still more ahead. That is wellness.
God Is in the Becoming
One of the things I love about Scripture is that God repeatedly calls people who are still becoming. David wasn’t yet a king when God called him. Moses didn’t feel prepared when God called him. Peter certainly wasn’t perfect when Jesus called him. And the disciples didn’t have everything figured out before Jesus said, “Follow me.” Their calling didn’t begin after they had become everything they were supposed to be. The becoming happened as they followed. Whew. Maybe you’ve been waiting to feel completely ready before you take your next step. Ready to start. Ready to heal. Ready to forgive. Ready to establish the boundary. Ready to apply. Ready to write. Ready to lead. Ready to say yes to God. But what if readiness isn’t the requirement? What if your next step is simply obedience? Sometimes God doesn’t show us the entire journey because the journey itself is part of what develops us.
Your Better Is Not Someone Else’s Better
COMPARISON…
Kills Contentment
Becoming also requires us to resist the temptation of comparison. Social media makes it incredibly easy to look at someone else’s chapter and question our own. Someone is celebrating the promotion. Someone bought the house. Someone got married. Someone launched the business. Someone finished the degree. Someone lost the weight. Someone’s ministry is growing. And suddenly, instead of celebrating our own progress, we begin questioning whether we’re behind. But hear me:
Your becoming does not have to look like anybody else’s.
God created you on purpose, for a purpose. Your experiences are different. Your assignments are different. Your lessons are different. Your timing is different. And your BETTER is personal. The goal isn’t to become more like everybody else. The goal is to become more fully who God created YOU to be.
Becoming Requires Letting Go
There is another side of becoming that we don’t always talk about. Sometimes becoming requires unbecoming. Unlearning. Releasing. Letting go. There are versions of ourselves that helped us survive seasons we are no longer living in. Perhaps hyper-independence protected you once, but now God is teaching you how to receive support. Perhaps saying yes to everyone once made you feel needed, but now you’re learning that boundaries are healthy. Perhaps staying quiet once kept the peace, but now you’re learning how to use your voice. Perhaps perfectionism helped you achieve, but now you’re learning that rest does not make you lazy. Sometimes becoming who we are called to be requires releasing who we thought we had to be. That, too, is growth.
What Does Your “Better” Look Like?
This is one of the questions at the heart of 30 Days Toward YOUR BETTER. Not somebody else’s better. YOUR BETTER. Maybe your better is getting eight hours of sleep. Maybe it’s praying before reaching for your phone. Maybe it’s going to therapy. Maybe it’s drinking more water. Maybe it’s forgiving yourself. Maybe it’s saying no without writing a three-paragraph explanation. Maybe it’s spending more intentional time with your family. Maybe it’s returning to something you abandoned because fear convinced you that you couldn’t do it. Maybe it’s finally resting. Better doesn’t always have to be dramatic. Sometimes better is simply making one healthier decision today than you made yesterday. And then doing it again tomorrow.
Transformation doesn’t happen by chance—it happens one intentional day at a time.
30 Days Toward YOUR BETTER is a faith-centered guided journal created to help you strengthen your relationship with God while nurturing your mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Through daily Scripture, thoughtful reflections, mental health insights, prayers, affirmations, and practical journaling prompts, you’ll be encouraged to grow through every experience and move confidently toward the person God created you to be.
Whether you’re beginning a new season, healing from the last one, or simply choosing to become better, this 30-day journey will meet you right where you are.
Your BETTER starts today.
A Wednesday Wellness Check-In
As you pause today, ask yourself: Who am I becoming?
Not just—What am I accomplishing?
Not—What do people think about me?
Not—How quickly am I getting there?
But:
Who am I becoming spiritually?
Who am I becoming emotionally?
Who am I becoming mentally?
Who am I becoming physically?
Who am I becoming relationally?
And perhaps most importantly: Does the person I am becoming align with the person I believe God created me to be?
You don’t need to fix everything today. Choose one thing. One prayer. One boundary. One healthy choice. One conversation. One act of courage. One moment of rest. One step toward your better. Because transformation is often found in the accumulation of small, intentional decisions.
Dr. Allie’s Heart ❤️
Beloved, becoming isn’t about rejecting who you are today while chasing some “better” version of yourself tomorrow. It is about honoring who you are, acknowledging where you’ve been, learning from what you’ve experienced, and remaining open to who God is shaping you to become. So don’t rush your process. Don’t despise your small beginnings. Don’t compare your middle to somebody else’s highlight. And don’t overlook the growth that has already happened simply because there is still more growing to do. You can be grateful for who you are AND excited about who you are becoming. That’s the beauty of the journey. At Becoming A Better Me, we believe wellness is not a destination. It is an ongoing journey of experiencing, learning, healing, growing, and becoming—mind, body, and spirit.
So today, give yourself permission to keep becoming.
EVER EXPERIENCING. EVER LEARNING. EVER BECOMING.
One day. One decision. One faithful step toward YOUR BETTER at a time.
